Responsible gambling

Need help now? Gambling problem? Call or text 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738), or call 1-800-GAMBLER. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 or 988.

Who can play

Gambling is for adults 21+ (18+ at some rooms) where it's legal. You're responsible for following the laws where you are. Check the age and location rules with the room or operator. Online poker is limited to people physically located in states where it's legal.

Keeping it fun

  • Play only with money you can afford to lose.
  • Decide how much time and money to spend before you sit down, and stick to it.
  • Don't chase losses.
  • Take breaks, and don't play when you're upset, tired or drinking.

Warning signs

It may be time to talk to someone if gambling is causing problems with money, work or relationships, if you're hiding it, or if you feel you can't cut back. You don't have to wait for things to get worse to ask for help.

Where to get help

  • 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738): call or text, 24/7. This is the National Problem Gambling Helpline, run by the National Council on Problem Gambling (ncpgambling.org). It is free and confidential, and you can also chat at ncpgambling.org/chat. Call 1-800-697-3738.
  • 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537). This long-running number is now run by the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (800gambler.org), and some state and local resources still list it. Call 1-800-426-2537. See 800gambler.org for the ways to reach it.
  • Why two numbers? The National Problem Gambling Helpline used to answer 1-800-GAMBLER. That number is now run by the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, and the National Council on Problem Gambling uses 1-800-MY-RESET. Both lines are active. We list both so you can reach help whichever number you have seen.
  • Chat and resources. ncpgambling.org has information, chat and a self-assessment.
  • Self-exclusion and limits. Many casinos and licensed online poker sites offer self-exclusion and limit-setting tools. Ask the room, or check with your state gaming regulator.
